Why I don’t post transformation photos as evidence of my work…
Yes , I help women improve health outcomes by coaching fat loss- reducing body fat, improving muscle mass & reducing stress levels.
Yes , I give women more strength, power, tone, energy & confidence through regular exercise.
Yes, women improve their nutrition when they work with me & feel energised & in control.
But do I post transformation photos? No, no, no!
I’m not saying they don’t have a place in gathering data for supporting your fat loss journey.
But I am saying that before & after photo posts on Instagram make me recoil in my skin.
They make me so cross.
They make me feel sad.
Because YOU CANNOT TELL A PERSONS HEALTH FROM HOW THEY LOOK.
Yes, this puts me at a disadvantage in my industry but I GENUINELY DO NOT CARE because I am not here to profit of individuals’ insecurities & I believe we are all more than our bodies
(Plus the kind of wholesome, wholehearted woman I coach wouldn’t want to be shown frowning in her knickers online anyway ❤️)
I am not here to make people feel guilty, or ashamed, or embarrassed for how they look.
What I want to do is simple - educate and empower women to feel confident, healthier, happier, and have more energy by improving their relationship with food, exercise, and their bodies. It’s simple, but in a world set up to make us feel like we are not enough, it’s not always easy.
Which is where my compassionate, evidence based approach to support and accountability comes in.
Here are 8 reasons why I don't share before and after transformation photos as evidence of my work…
1. Before and after photo’s reduce an individual down to how they look, and suggest an individual has more worth in their ‘ after’ photo. Human beings have inherent worth regardless of how they look.
2. These photos are a snapshot in time, a single moment. Our health and fitness cannot be compartmentalised like that- it’s part of our life as a wider whole. Transformation photos detract from and undermine the healthful and holistic nature of the work I do with clients .
3. Before and after photo’s perpetuate patriachial diet culture standards that say thinner is always better. It’s not. The thinnest you is not always the most healthiest or happiest you.
4. Transformation pictures do not show the internal mindset shifts & these are the most crucial for sustainable change. These photos suggest a very definate start and end point which reinforces the idea you can be on/ off ‘the wagon’. But to make changes that last you need to make changes for life.
5. Losing weight is often ONE of the outcomes when I work with individuals, but there are a tonne of other outcomes too that are impossible to photograph. Non tangible outcomes like energy, confidence, alignment, congruence and pride are important too.
6. Before & after photos suggest you can only be happy in a smaller body, but the reality is that happiness is not found in a scales weight or a dress size. Keeping promises to yourself builds self confidence, which improves happiness and self belief.
7. Before & after photos don’t tell the full story about how a person has achieved change. Some online coaches use questionable, unethical & unsustainable techniques to get those photos.Be careful who you trust and go to for advice. Your relationship with food, your body and exercise lasts a lifetime.
8. Before and after photos suggest fat loss is easy and that everyone is on an even playing field when it comes to lifestyle change. It’s not and they’re not! These photos perpetuate shame and embarrasment, with the idea thatbeing leaner makes you a superior, better person. It doesn’t.
